If there's one celebrity mum who refuses to apologise for her past or sugarcoat her life choices, it's much-loved actress Drew Barrymore.

And true to form, in her new book Wildflower, which acts as a philosophical examination of her life thus far, the famous mum-of-two doesn't hold back.

The 40-year-old Charlie's Angels star examines the various devastating moments which led her to believe she wouldn't make it to her 26th birthday.

Having been placed in a drug and alcohol institution for eighteen months at 13, Drew took her first steps into a clean and sober life at the age of 14, but without the help of family.

Having been legally emancipated from her parents, the star found herself fending for herself as she attempted to salvage the career which began so promisingly when she hit our screens as Gertie in ET.

Recalling that dark period in her life, Drew remembers the criticism levelled at her, writing: "People going, 'You're an unemployable disaster,' that's a tough trip to have by the time you're 14."

Isolated from friends and family, a teenage Drew struggled to visualise a future and found herself living a life of fear and regret.

Speaking to the Guardian newspaper, she said: "It was in a dangerous neighbourhood and I was so scared to sleep. I had bars on the window and alley cats f***ing 30 feet away. I was so terrified."

Decades away from meeting her future husband, Will Kopelman, and their two children Olive and Frankie, Drew remembers feeling completely out of her depth, saying: "I was so scared of not knowing where I was going. I really had a fear that I was going to die at 25."

Thankfully, the actress overcame her struggles and just years after fearing for her future, Drew was creating a new one for herself - something which she insists will be shared with her daughters when the time is right.

"I'm not going to pretend I am not who I am. I'm going to show them how it got me to where I am now," she insisted.

What a woman!
