A UK charity leading the efforts to combat child sex abuse has discovered and removed nearly 70,000 pictures of videos of that content.

The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) had more power to actively search for that type of content and take action in 2014 and has found the figures have doubled since last year.

With some truly disturbing results including images and videos of 1,788 victims who were determined to being aged two or under.

And this is just a drop in the ocean, the child sex abuse imagery in the UK makes up only 0.2% of the total availability.

The numbers that were recorded by IWF were 68,092 reports of content of child sex abuse and of those, 69% were determined to be under ten years of age.

However, the hardest to read was a devastating 34% of imagery were category A which involves rape or sexual torture of children.

IWF chief executive Susie Hargreaves told BBC News:

"Last year our analysts broke all records for assessing reports. By being allowed to actively search for these hideous images of children, we've seen a dramatic increase in the sheer number of illegal images and videos that we've been able to remove from the internet.

"But despite our success, this isn't the time to stand still. What we never forget is that behind these headlines and every single image we remove from the internet there is a real child being abused."

The charity hopes to expand its team of 12 analysts to 17 so that they can do more thorough investigation.
