Catherine Malatesta was really looking forward to her prom, that big event in the school calendar when kids get dressed up and get up to no-good.

And naturally, she spent plenty of time looking for the perfect dress for the occasion.

But, unlike her classmates, Catherine did her shopping from her emergency room hospital bed.

That's because she was suffering from epithelioid sarcoma, an aggressive cancer in her spine and lungs.

Incredibly, despite being hospitalised two weeks beforehand with fluid in her lungs, Catherine managed to make it to the prom.

She turned up just a few hours after being discharged!

Four days later, however, she was back in hospital. Sadly, she passed away there, last August.

"The last time most of her friends saw her was at prom," her mother Jennifer Goodwin told the Globe. "The last thing they saw her in was her dress."

Catherine was a popular girl. She was on the student council, played hocked and took part in many school plays.

When her mum invited a group of her closest friends - from school and summer camp - to look at her things and take what they wanted, her prom dress was still hanging in her wardrobe.

So four of Catherine's friends decided they'd wear the dress to their respective proms throughout the month of May.

Catherine's mum Jennifer has dubbed the sweet move 'the sisterhood of the travelling prom dress.'

A tailor will help the dress fit each girl for their special day, while Goodwin will deliver each dress and dry clean it between each event.

"I know my daughter would be overjoyed that her friends wanted to honour her memory in this way," Jennifer said.

"She will be with them at their proms."
