How many times have you looked at your little one’s hair and just wanted to cry? Between swimming, tying it up themselves and squirming everything the comb goes near them it can mean your son or daughter’s hair is a little knotty, to say the least!

However, before you succumb to taking them to the hairdressers and spending a fortune to sort out the problem, have a go of these handy tried and tested ways.

It is time consuming so make sure you aren't rushing to get them to bed or out the door - this requires patience, from both of you!

1. Wash it with plenty of conditioner

Before you get started, wash your child’s hair as normal but put in an extra dollop of conditioner and leave it on the head for two minutes. Rinse it out and pat the hair dry – don’t rub it.

2. Work with damp hair

The best time to tackle a knot is to do so when your child’s hair is wet. It is easier to part into sections damp rather than dry and less likely to hurt your child.

3. Use spray on conditioner

When the hair is wet, spray on leave-in conditioner, focusing particularly on the tangled area. This will help the brush run through a lot easier.

4. Work in sections

Don’t look at the hair as one, rather work it into sections - and don’t start with the knotty area. Using your paddle brush, divide it into about three or four inch sections and brush through until it is tangle-free. As you work through the sections clip it back up until you are only left with the knotty area.

5. More spray on conditioner

Spray more leave-in conditioner directly onto the knot until it is soaking wet, then, starting at the end, gently brush and break the knot apart. This will take time, but if you hold the hair at the top it shouldn’t hurt your child too much.

Remember, you can always cut it out.... but we don't recommend this!
