Young homosexuals may have negative experiences when they reveal their sexual orientation to their parents. It is important for parents to offer their child support, especially since they may be going through a difficult period ion their lives. For many young lesbians, gays or bisexuals, it can also be a liberating experience, and exciting phase which supportive parents have an opportunity to be part of.
Is your child trying to drop hints?
Some children may try to drop hints that they may be gay. They will do this either verbally or through their behaviour. Some might be particularly homophobic which can also be an indicator.
Others may try to explore their parent’s view on homosexuality- particularly by asking what they think about well-known celebrities. This is a way of judging whether or not the topic of homosexuality is safe to speak about.
Parents should also prepare themselves for hints and invitations to talk about same-sex sexuality. Some may be tempted to argue against it, however this should be avoided. Think about how difficult it must be for a son or daughter to talk to their parents about a topic like this.
When your child tells you
As a mum, it can feel like your hopes and expectations for your child have been turned inside-out, however you should not worry about this. It will take a lot for a child to tell their parent that they are gay, and often, they will wonder whether their parents will still love them.
No parent wants to cause their child any more stress than they already have. If you’re finding it difficult to accept what your child has told you, speak to parents going through a similar situation.
Supporting your child
A parent’s support is one of the most comforting things for a gay child and it can make a significant difference to them. Don’t assume that your child will have a lower quality of life because he or she is gay. Times are changing and there are more rights for gays than ever before. Continue to show your child support and hopefully they will speak to you more openly about their feelings.
