As your child gets older, his or her fascination with the world will become even greater and you’ll probably find that home, and your neighbourhood, are no longer a source of constant interest. That’s perfectly normal and the preschool years are the perfect time to start planning exciting and interesting day trips that are fun and a great learning experience. Here are a few ideas that you might like to use.

Go to a museum. Whether it’s looking at dinosaurs at the natural history museum, or suits of armour at the cultural history museum, the exhibits are sure to interest your child. A trip to a planetarium for a special children’s show can also be great fun for your little explorer.

Plan a trip to the zoo or the aquarium. Both are great learning experiences and children find it both interesting and fun to watch land or sea creatures ‘in real life.’ It helps to make all those books and stories more real to your child.

A child friendly hiking trip, or a trip to the beach, or even a botanical garden, can also be great fun for the whole family. Make a point of looking at the animals and plants you see along the way and look out for interesting sights like waterfalls or rock formations.

Whichever trip you choose, make sure that you plan ahead. If you’re visiting a zoo or an aquarium, visit the website first to find out when events like feeding are happening and to get a map. Museums often have holiday programs so find out what’s on when you’re planning to go. Make sure that you pack a bag with snacks, drinks, wipes for little hands and sun and rain protection, and don’t forget your camera! That way, after the trip, you and your child can have fun putting together an album about their trip, while planning the next one.
