Kids love a craft that really gets their creative juices flowing, that they can keep forever as a memento, and so this DIY clay recipe can be rolled out again and again; it’s super easy, uses very few ingredients, and will keep the kids occupied for an entire afternoon.

What you need:

  • 1½ cups of sand (you can either collect this yourself from the beach, or purchase in a craft shop)
  • 1½ cups of cornflour (available to purchase in any supermarket)
  • 1½ cups of water
  • 2 cups of bicarbonate of soda
  • Saucepan
  • Spoon
  • Greaseproof paper

What to do:

  1. Mix all of your ingredients together in a saucepan, and heat it over a medium temperature.
  2. When the mixture looks almost like a bread dough, empty it out onto the greaseproof paper and leave it to cool.
  3. Place the clay underneath a damp tea-towel and, once cool, knead the clay into a ball. You can then roll it out, but leave it at a decent thickness.
  4. Use shapes, or your child’s hands and feet to impress shapes into the clay dough. Once these are complete, place them on a tray and pop them in the oven.
  5. Bake the clay dough at about 100 degrees Celsius for about two hours. Once baked, turn the oven off and allow the newly cooked dough to completely cool down inside the oven.
  6. Paint and decorate as desired.
