Travelling is an exciting time for both kids and their parents; however, it is important you take certain steps, depending on your destination, to ensure the whole family stays healthy and happy throughout the trip.

Here are six tips to ensure everyone has a fun and healthy holiday:

Bottle water
In certain locations, tap water may not be safe to drink or to even brush your teeth with. Make sure you do some proper research and if in doubt always go for sealed, bottle water, even for brushing your teeth.

Foods to avoid
Avoid eating salads as they are usually cleaned with tap water. The same goes for fruit and any salsas or dips made with fresh ingredients as they can cause you to experience symptoms including diarrhoea.

Drinks
Don’t drink the jug of water that is put on the table when dining and always ask for no ice when ordering a drink.

Vaccinations
Before you head off, make sure the whole family is up to date on their vaccinations and check to see if there are any certain requirements needed for the country you are visiting. The best way to ensure you are adequately protected is to book an appointment with your doctor and talk to them.

Sun protection
Make sure the whole family is protected from the sun as not only is sunburn sore, it can leave you dehydrated. Make sure everyone wears hats to protect their heads from the head and if possible avoid being in the sun between 11am and 3pm when the sun is at it hottest.

Wash your hands
Bring a hand sanitizer around with you when out and about. Use it when taking public transport, visiting farms or zoos and any other times when hand washing facilities are not readily available.

When going abroad, it is important you have adequate insurance to cover the unlikely event that someone in the family gets ill. Hospital costs abroad can be expensive and even if it is just an ear infection you can be left with high bills that will ruin your holiday
