We still haven’t come to terms with the fact that the marvellous Claire Foy and Matt Smith won’t be returning for the third series of The Crown.

The creators of the popular Netflix drama series always planned on replacing the stars as their characters- Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip- got older. Olivia Colman will be taking over from Claire Foy, but the show has yet to find their new Prince Phillip.

However, according to the Daily Mail, it looks like a Golden Globe award winner may be taking over the role of Prince Phillip.

Star of the popular series including Blackadder, House and The Night Manager, Hugh Laurie is rumoured to star in the third season of The Crown.

Netflix has yet to confirm this news, but we’re hoping it’s true. Saying goodbye to the dashing Matt Smith won’t be easy, but knowing Hugh Laurie will take over makes us feel that little bit better.

It is understood that producers are very keen on casting Hugh, who will play a middle-aged Prince Phillip during the 1960s and 1980s.

Starring alongside Olivia Colman will be Helena Bonham Carter who is taking over the role of Princess Margaret.

It is understood that filming for the third series of the show will commence in July

Unfortunately, no air-date has been revealed by Netflix yet, but we’re hoping the third series will be released during the winter. Is there anything better than curling up by the fire with a bottle of wine and an entire season of The Crown to binge-watch? We think not.
