John Rexroad has been married to his wife, Teri, for 40 years, and in an act of true love he made the ultimate sacrifice to help save her life.

Two years ago, Teri was told that her kidneys were no longer working properly, and she began dialysis.

Her daughter Sarah also became ill around the same time; she was diagnosed with liver failure and, sadly, passed away in September 2017.

When the family should have been grieving, the couple were desperately trying to get a kidney transplant for Teri.

"It's not something where you get better or you even hold your own," John explained to Today when talking about his wife's dialysis.

"It really doesn't just steal the time that you're in dialysis."

In a show of true love and sacrifice, John underwent tests to see if he was a match, and was delighted when it was confirmed.

The couple's surgery was scheduled for January of this year, and just three weeks later, John was back in the office for half days.

Thankfully, the transplant was a success for Teri, who is grateful that she no longer has to go on dialysis.

And while John's gesture took courage and bravery, it is clearly not something he has any regrets over.

"I married my best friend, I fell in love with my best friend, and no I get to spend the rest of my life with my best friend.I mean, I don't know how I could ask for anything more than that."
