Emily MacDonagh revealed that she failed to spot her five-month son Theo’s tongue-tie, even though she is a qualified doctor.
The young mum said she felt “guilty” when she realised little Theo had the condition known as ankyloglossia and found out he would need an operation.
Tongue-tie is a condition where the piece of skin connecting the tongue to the base of the mouth is too tight and the baby cannot move their tongue easily. Babies with tongue-tie sometimes have difficulty feeding and swallowing but the condition is easy to miss.
Emily said: “I didn’t pick up on it and I’m a doctor. I felt guilty, I should have looked in his mouth and thought about tongue-tie.
“When they’re yours you don’t look at them as a patient. Pete and I were both crying when Theo had his operation. It was really traumatic.”
Emily, 27, also revealed she’s received harsh criticism for her relationship with Peter Andre who is 16 years older than her. They met when she was a 22-year-old medical student and have been in a relationship since 2012, according to The Mail Online.
She met the singer after her surgeon father performed an operation on Peter and they’ve since gotten married and had two children.
In 2014, she became pregnant with their first baby Amelia and gave birth to baby Theo last year.
She told OK! magazine: “I find it hard when people say I’m too young to be with him – my skin is not thick enough and I find it very upsetting. I don’t have social media because otherwise, you’re opening yourself up to that criticism."
In 2012, Peter said he was not worried about the age gap: “A lot has been made of the age gap between us but she turns 23 this week and we don’t even think about the age difference– it’s irrelevant.
“I’m really really happy and although it’s very early days with Ems and we’re just seeing how it goes, she’s a beautiful girl and I’m loving spending time with her.”
Emily is now step-mother to Peter’s two children from his relationship with Katie Price, Junior and Princess. She said being a step-mum can be difficult at times.
She said: “When you’re a step-parent and you’re sharing kids with their other parent it's hard and I don’t want to impose my parenting methods on his kids when he might not agree with them.”
Emily has no plans for any more babies at present, saying: "We need a bit of a break and to give the kids that we’ve got our time. When Theo is older and more settled then maybe in a few years we’ll consider it, so never say never."
