Losing hair is part and parcel of having babies, but for many of us we are losing extra hair that we grew during pregnancy.

However, this was not the case for Loose Women panellist Nadia Sawalha, who was told she had “the balding gene” after giving birth to her children, Maddy, 13, and Kiki, nine.

"Like any mum, I lost hair after I had my babies,” she told Coleen Nolan, Ruth Langsford and Gloria Hunniford this afternoon.

“I went to the doctor and had an awful appointment where he told me, 'I'm sorry to tell you, you have the balding gene'.

"He explained that you don't just lose hair as you get older. He said, 'I can see the follicles where they closed and will never grow again'."

Talking to the ladies, the 51-year-old said her hair is only about a quarter of what it is was, before adding she took the initial diagnosis pretty hard.

"It's devastating, I'm really worried about it. I do define myself with my hair and my natural curls. I feel really shallow about it now."

However, Nadia admitted that she felt embarrassed talking about her own hair when Coleen proudly recalled how her sister Bernie refused to wear a wig when she was battling cancer.

"I feel so embarrassed talking about this with your beautiful sister,” she said.
