Australian model and actress Erin McNaught has revealed that she contracted mastitis while breastfeeding her new baby. Mastitis is a breast tissue infection, commonly caused by a blocked milk duct.
The 35-year-old took to Instagram to share her personal experience of mastitis, explaining that she had no idea how painful and serious it could be.
The mum-of-two said: 'I'd had suspected mild mastitis a few days before but thought it had cleared up, so I put the fluey feeling down to only getting an average of three hours’ sleep a night and being generally really run down”.
Erin felt ok on Friday but by Saturday, her condition had worsened.
“I could barely even stand up and I was in AGONY,” she wrote. “Turns out it was mastitis and I was going downhill, FAST”.
Erin realised she needed medical help and called her doctor. Her doctor came to her home and prescribed her an emergency antibiotic for her to take “straight away”.
“If I had left it even until the next morning, I most likely would have been HOSPITALISED and an IV antibiotic given for 24hrs!” she said.
“Imagine being back in hospital with a newborn baby, hooked up to an IV, simply because you ignored your symptoms and tried to push through”, she added.
“So if you're a new mum and you don't feel right, PLEASE, get yourself checked out! It's better to be safe than sorry”, she cautioned.
Erin, who is married to British rapper Example, welcomed her second son Ennio Gleave last month. The couple’s eldest son Evander Maxwell will be three later this year.
Other mums thanked her for sharing her experience of mastitis, with many explaining that they had also been affected by it.
“I had this with my son. Ended up at the emergency doctors and it took me almost four weeks of antibiotics and a trip to the breast clinic to have needles stuck into my boobs to drain the blockages before I was completely mastitis free and feeling better again. Just agony”, one mum wrote.
We’re glad to hear Erin is better now – what a horrible and frightening ordeal.
If you have concerns about mastitis, always seek professional medical help.
