Fans were left shocked last week when it emerged that Fergie and actor Josh Duhamel were splitting, after eight years of marriage. Now, the former Black Eyed Peas singer has broken her silence on the timing of their announcement.

“Honestly, it was just getting a little weird for us with all the romantic questions,” she told People.

While the pair had been ‘leading separate lives’ for months, they were waiting for the right time to make their split official. Their son Axl, four, took priority in that process.

“We just wanted to get adjusted in private,” explained the 42-year-old.

“Axl’s school has helped…I get to learn from the teachers, and see how he reacts in a group of friends that he knows.

“And I got to help out and serve them snacks and clean the dishes. We have fun, we get down and dirty, and read the stories with our costumes. You get down in the sand, and get dirty – I love it.”

While co-parenting with her Transformers ex is going ‘great’ so far, Fergie admitted that a public announcement was necessary – particularly as she set off on the promotional tour for her latest album, Double Dutchess.

“We’re great friends, we love each other so much, and it just got to the point where it was getting a little weird. There’s no perfect time, so we just decided to do it,” she added.

Fergie and Josh met on the set of the actor’s TV show, Las Vegas, back in 2004. They dated for three years before getting engaged, and tied the knot early in 2009. They went on to welcome little Axl in 2013.

News of the duo’s split came last week, in the form of a joint statement.

“With absolute love and respect, we decided to separate as a couple earlier this year,” the heartfelt statement read.

“To give our family the best opportunity to adjust, we wanted to keep this a private matter before sharing it with the public. We are, and will always be united in our support of each other and our family.”

No doubt this is a very difficult time for all involved, and we’re wishing them all the luck in the world with their co-parenting journey.
