Jada Pinkett-Smith has revealed that “friendship” is the key to her 20-year marriage to husband Will.

Appearing on Loose Women to promote her new movie, Girls’ Trip, the mum-of-two said: “We celebrate 20 this year. I think the secret is just friendship.”

She added: “You have to go off and find your happiness. I think the hardest thing to do is being married.”

However, she did admit that the couple have had their problems, saying they had gone to couples’ therapy together. The couple faced divorce rumours last year, and Jada recently refuted a claim that they were “swingers”, according to The Mail Online.

“Therapy can be an awesome entry point as far as getting to be where you need to go,” she said.

Jada didn’t elaborate on the exact challenges the couple had faced but hinted that they had been through some trying times.

“People need to go and deal with personal traumas – because, with that, comes expectations.

“You expect them to fill voids for you, but you need to do that separately. Expecting someone else to make you happy is not right," she added.

The couple met in 1994, when Jada auditioned for the part of Will’s girlfriend on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Although she was ruled out for the part because of her height, she became his girlfriend in real life and the couple have been together ever since.

They are now proud parents to son Jaden, 19, and daughter Willow, 16; both of whom have followed their parents into the world of showbiz.

Jada revealed that her teenage children are quite well-behaved, saying: ”They don’t challenge me like how I challenged my mother. They are much different.

“I’m open with them and respect them as much as they respect me. There is not a lot of strife, and there’s a lot of understanding. I'm raising my children to be strong and true and happy,” she added.

Speaking about her character Lisa in Girls’ Trip, Jada said: “When you're a mother, it's all about the kids. You lose your lady mojo.

"My character is prim and proper. I'm like that in real life now, but can't say I've always been like that. I've had quite a past.”

The actress said that the movie industry is slowly opening up to more to women.

“Hollywood is having more women lead things behind the scenes - producers, directors, even CEO's who understand the female journey."

She added: “Women can be funny. Be anything. Slowly but surely we’re getting opportunities we deserved.”
