Credit where it’s due, celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has shown real dedication to tackling childhood obesity, and came in for major praise this week when the sugar tax he has long campaigned for was introduced.

However, not content to sit on his laurels, Jamie turned his attention to another topic – breastfeeding – but not everyone is too pleased with his comments on the subject.

The star, who is set to welcome his fifth child with wife Jools, has come in for criticism after deeming breastfeeding ‘easy’.

The comments came during Jamie’s interview with LBC Radio, in which he admitted he is ‘desperately trying to scrabble around to get more information’ on breastfeeding for mums and mums-to-be.

“If you breastfeed for more than six months, women are 50% less likely to get breast cancer. When do you ever hear that? Never. We need women to do it more,” he said.

So far, Jamie’s comments seem far from controversial – but a number of listeners took umbrage with the second part of the interview.

“It’s easy, it’s more convenient, it’s more nutritious, it’s better, it’s free,” he added.

As you can imagine, many mothers took issue with Jamie’s description here, particularly his assumption that breastfeeding is ‘easy’.

“Jamie Oliver; calling breastfeeding ‘easy’ has probably just catapulted you into the ‘most ignorant comments ever made’ category,” wrote one frustrated Twitter user.

Meanwhile, another mused over the potentially damaging impact of the chef’s comments, tweeting: “Jamie Oliver helping mms who couldn’t/ gave up on breastfeeding feel more guilt and pressure.”
