Medical experts have long warned of the negative effects of energy drinks on our children, from high blood pressure to Type 2 Diabetes.

Jamie Oliver is joining their ranks in speaking out against the consumption of energy drinks by young kids. As a father-of-five himself, this is a health concern that hits close to home.

The celebrity chef reached out to his 6.2M Insta followers saying, "Really important that we get this message out that energy drinks are #NotForChildren. Really keen to hear your thoughts on this."

And hear people's thoughts he did!

"You should add coffee to that list. A 15-year-old girl doesn’t need a strong latte for school," a fan wrote.

"Lucozade is ok for kids to drink when they’re under the weather," another shared.

"I don't think they should even be for adults, especially the full sugar ones," one person commented.

Someone else went as far to say, "Energy drinks aren’t for humans!"

The restaurateur polled his Instagram followers about whether or not kids should be able to buy energy drinks, and the majority overwhelmingly said no.

Jamie's message comes after supermarket Waitrose's ban on letting children under the age of 16 buy energy drinks.

Youngsters will no longer be allowed to purchase drinks such as Rockstar and Red Bull at the UK supermarket chain from March 5.

Jamie wants this ban extended beyond Waitrose. He tweeted at UK Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, asking that the politician prohibit the sale of energy drinks to under 16s.

Jamie and Jimmy's Friday Night Feast on Channel 4 will focus on the issue for their programme at 8pm tonight.

What's your take, mums? Would you let your kids buy energy drinks before they turn 16?
