John, Patrick & Michael considered the most traditional Irish Dad or Grandad names in Ireland

The day to celebrate our Dads and Grandads, Father’s Day, is fast approaching and to mark the occasion, My Nametags, www.mynametags.ie, undertook a survey* to find out more about our Irish Dads and Grandads…..with some interesting insights uncovered.

Most Traditional Irish Dad & Grandad Name

The respondents were asked to select the names they felt were the most traditional ‘Irish Dad or Grandad’ first names with the survey revealing the top 5 names as follows….

  • John (70%)
  • Patrick (56%)
  • Michael (32%)
  • Joseph (29%)
  • Seamus (22%)

What we call our Father

The survey also explored what we call our fathers. Not surprisingly ‘Dad’ came out on top with 83% of respondents addressing their father by ‘Dad’. In second spot was ‘Da’ with 10% and then ‘Daddy’ with 7%.

Pet Names from Dad

Respondents were asked if their Dads used any pet names for themselves or their siblings. The majority, 59%, stated that their Dad only ever called them or their siblings by their first names but some pet names were also revealed including Love (20%), Pet (17%), Babe (7%) followed by Doll, Darling and Sweetheart (with 5% each).

Who rules the roost…...?

Dads throughout the country may be a bit disappointed but perhaps not surprised to find out that when asked who has the final say on decisions in their household, Dad only received 14% of the respondents vote. Mum on the other hand received 38% of the vote but thankfully 40% agreed that both Mum and Dad made the decisions together.

I get it from my Daddy

The survey also revealed the most popular hobbies and interests that have been handed down by Irish Dads and Grandfathers. Sports scored very highly with GAA in first spot (40%), followed by music (29%) in second and then soccer, golf and rugby.

Commenting on the survey, Lars B. Andersen, Founder and Managing Director of My Nametags.ie, commented, “Father’s Day is a day to celebrate our Fathers and Grandfathers and the team at My Nametags were delighted to mark the day by finding out what names are considered the most traditional first names for Dads and Grandads in Ireland today. We would like to wish all the Dads and Grandads throughout the country, especially Johns, Patricks and Michaels, a very Happy Father’s Day.”
