Despite the fact she gave birth to one of the most most highly-acclaimed and much-loved actors in the world, it seems Leonardo Di Caprio's mum is not immune to internet trolls who felt compelled to slam her display of body hair in a photo taken with her son and ex-husband in 1976.

The image which emerged online in recent days has fallen victim to serious trolling, with innumerable members of the public taking issue with the fact Leo's mum, Irmelin, decided to display underarm hair in a photo which was published on History in Picture's Facebook page.

Obviously stunned that a woman would choose not to conform to societal norms and rid her body of every last strand, internet users wasted no time slamming the incredibly sweet throwback shot.

'Women with hair under their arms is f***ing disgusting", wrote one irrationally irate Facebook user while another opined: 'It was the 1970s, not the 1400s.. Women shaved their armpits then. It's obvious his parents were hippies...'

Thankfully, Irmelin had supporters among the online trolls who quickly came to her defence on a topic which surely shouldn't have been given as much time as it ultimately was.

"When I saw this, I thought "Wow, that little toddler just got an Oscar. His parents must be extremely proud!" Not "Omg, his mom didn't shave her pits during a time where women didn't shave their pits," admitted one stunned social media user.

Echoing the sentiments of fellow supporters, another reminded the public: "His mother was the one that worked multiple jobs to support her and Leo... and all the ignorant comments about her armpits."

Given that it's International Women's Day, surely we should be celebrating a woman, who became a single mother when her son was one-year-old, and who ultimately supported, raised and nurtured a person who is now known for the indelible mark he has made on the film and entertainment industry?
