While Hollywood superstars are no stranger to rumour and speculation, it looks like this Oscar-nominee wasn't going to take a recent false report lying down.

Leonardo DiCaprio was attending the world-famous Cannes Film Festival in recent months when his attention was drawn to an article published by French magazine, Oops!

Claiming he had fathered a child with world-famous performer, Rihanna, the magazine implied the Wolf of Wall Street star was far from happy with the news and ultimately reluctant to get involved with the Barbadian beauty.

Reportedly furious by the false report which boasted the headline: "Rihanna pregnant with Leonardo's baby: He doesn't want the baby",  the 40-year-old actor sued the European publication, and won.

According to numerous reports, the publication has been ordered to pay $8,800 in damages and legal fees despite the fact Leo originally sued for $18,000 which is the maximum amount allowed under French law.

Acknowledging the libellous nature of their piece, the owner of the magazine, Frederic Truskolaki, reportedly acknowledged that they did not have the salient facts when going to print, saying: "We thought she might be. We were not sure, of course."

Mr. Truskolaki was reportedly unsurprised by the star's decision to file a lawsuit, saying: "We were totally expecting this decision, since in France when any magazine speaks about a celebrity’s private life the magazine is automatically condemned."

The stars were once rumoured to be dating - a claim which Leo vehemently denied in a statement issue through his representative.
