According to a recent study published in the journal of Human Reproduction, girls who consume sugary drinks have their first period earlier than their counterparts who consume less fizzy drinks.

Researchers studied the menstrual cycle of 5,583 girls aged between 9 and 14 between the years 1996 and 2001 and discovered that girls who who drank more than 1.5 servings of sweetened beverages a day had their first period over two months earlier than girls who did not.

The researchers discovered that the girls who drank the most fizzy drinks got their period earliest.

Researchers have acknowledged that the time difference between the groups seems relatively insignificant, but feel that it is a significant discrepancy given that the main difference was the consumption of sweetened or carbonated drinks.

The findings were a cause for concern as studies have shown that the earlier a girl starts her menstrual cycle the higher the risk of developing breast cancer at a later stage.
