A popular magazine has come under serious fire after promoting a recipe which former reality television star, Kristin Cavallari, purports to feed her own children.

After Kristin featured the recipe in her new lifestyle book Balancing in Heels, People magazine chose to include it as part of the 'Great Ideas' category on their website in a move which has been subject to intense criticism in recent days.

Commenting on her decision to avoid standard baby formula, the 29-year-old star explained: "I would rather feed my baby these real, organic ingredients than a heavily processed store-bought formula that contains 'glucose syrup solids."

The mum-of-three stresses the importance of pure produce, saying that she "prefers to know every ingredient that goes into the foods I feed my family - especially when it come to baby formula."

However, the recipe, which included goat's milk and virgin olive oil, has since been pulled from People's website after complaints began flooding in from outraged members the public.

Acknowledging the public's concern, Dr. Mark Corkins, a pediatrics gastroenterologist and member of the AAP asserted: "These cocktail formulas do not have the fortification of the vitamins and minerals that the standard formulas have."

When asked her opinion on the controversial feature, Dr. Rebecca Mandel, a Los Angeles pediatrician wasted no time expressing her disdain for the unequivocal support given to Kristin's take on infant nutrition.

"People magazine has done its readers a dangerous service by publishing this article and promoting Ms. Cavallari's 'formula.' They should be ashamed of legitimising this recipe as a safe alternative for infants," she asserted.

Echoing these sentiments, one member of the public commented on the website's feature. writing: "I am a neurologist practicing in New York and am writing to tell you that I will be cancelling all waiting room copies of People magazine after your publication of the following article."

Kristin, best known for her roles in The Hills and Laguna Beach: The Real OC, welcomed her youngest child in November last year.
