Pete Frates, an advocate of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) awareness who developed the Ice Bucket Challenge along with friends and family, has announced a new addition to the household.

On his Facebook page Pete gave the happy news that his wife Julie has given birth to a healthy baby girl called Lucy.

“Yes!! Little Lucy Frates has arrived and Mom, Dad and Lucy are perfect! Amazing blessing as the exclamation point to the miraculous month of August 2014!”

Pete was the captain of the Boston College Baseball team before his diagnosis with ALS in 2012. Since then he has devoted himself to raising awareness about the condition.

The Ice Bucket Challenge has been an overwhelming success both for raising money and raising awareness for ALS.

Over three million people are estimated to have taken part, including the world’s biggest celebrities, making it a social media phenomenon.

$100 million has been raised for ALS research in the United States alone since the challenge took off in July.
