Product models change dramatically throughout the years – look at cars, at lawnmowers and hoovers: each year it seems there’s a new futuristic addition to the market promising to be quieter, stronger and faster.

So how incredible is it so, that the breast pump – first invented in 1854 – aside from an update in 1921 to make it mechanical and then in 1956, has pretty much stayed the same!

Breast pumps are noisy things, they’re cumbersome, outdated and often uncomfortable. So it’s pretty shocking that no one has seen the opportunity to bring a new design to the market – well, until now.

Entrepreneurial husband and wife duo Samantha Rudolph and Jarod Miller are hoping to bring the breast pump into the 21st century.

As a nursing mum herself Samantha was outraged that the crucial tool was “decades out of date”. Together, Samantha and Jarod decided to reimagine the pumping experience, with the goal to change the lives of nursing mums everywhere.

“We asked ourselves: what would a breast pump be if it was invented in 2016, instead of 1854?”  says Jarod.

And so they developed a prototype for a revolutionary breast pump, called the Babyation, with the goal to bring it to market via a Kickstarter campaign.

“Our pump is quiet, the bottles don’t hang off the breasts, and it’s controllable by smartphone and offers customisable programmes and an incredible app,” he says. “It’s comfortable and it’s discreet.”

“Quite simply,” adds Samantha, “it’s a game changer for breastfeeding mums.”

So how does it work? Well, a small breast shield is placed on the nipple(s) and connects to a wire that travels down your body. The pump uses a smartphone app to control suction and speed, and comes with handy presets to suit different circumstances.

Quite simply, it’s what the breast pump SHOULD be like in 2016!
