A New Zealand mum has appealed for help this week, after her newborn daughter lost her fingertip in a hospital gaffe.

According to reports, the shocking incident befell little Lilly when she was just three days old, at Waikato Hospital.

The tot had been receiving fluids via a tube, part of which was taped to her baby finger. When a nurse went to cut off the tube using a scissors however, she accidentally snipped the top of the baby’s finger.

Writing on her GiveALittle page (link here), mum Marie Campbell revealed: “Surgeons tried to attach it but unfortunately it didn’t work.”

“Because of this, I have to travel back and forth from my rural home to her hospital for appointments (around 30kms each way), a cost I cannot afford,” she said.

She went on to appeal to kind members of the public to help her out by giving ‘a small bit to get by’ during this difficult time.

A representative from the hospital said an investigation into the incident is now underway.

“We acknowledge this is very distressing for the family, and we have apologised to the parents. This kind of incident is very unusual, and we are treating it very seriously,” the statement read.

We hope little Lilly will be OK.
