It’s difficult to think, as you hold your precious baby close to your chest, that there are defenceless little ones out there who are fighting for their lives with no parents or family to take care of them.

This is a fact that nurse and mum-of-eight Cori Salchert has, over the years, found very difficult to process, and this is why she has dedicated the past four years to making a difference to vulnerable babies in need.

With a background in peri-natal bereavement, Cori decided back in 2012 that she was going to take in, care for and love little babies who – for some reason or another – have been abandoned by their parents and are facing into either serious illness or even terminal diagnoses.

Cori and her husband Mark embarked on their incredible journey with a baby girl who was born without a left or right brain hemisphere. Taken in by them at two weeks of age, the tot lived for 50 days and passed away in Cori’s loving arms.

So affected was she by this experience as well as the thought of other precious babies passing away without the love of a parent, that Cori decided to take in many more little ones, and now her story has gone viral around the world.

Speaking to local newspaper the Sheboygan Press about the newest addition to the family, Charlie, who is suffering from a brain disorder, she explained: “He will die; there's no changing that...But, we can make a difference in how he lives, and the difference for Charlie is that he will be loved before he dies."

What an incredible family they are – it goes without saying that their love and care has transformed many little lives over the years.
