Pregnancy can be a worrying time for some parents-to-be, particularly if they have received unwelcome news from their doctor - which is why our medical professionals need to be as attentive with the emotional side of their work as they are with the paperwork.

This is a message that Marley Bedford’s mum wants everyone to know, after sharing her story with the Love What Matters Facebook page this week.

The doting mum took to the page to share an open letter to the doctor who ‘shattered her world’ with ‘an awful diagnosis’ for her daughter, during her pregnancy.

Sharing recent photos from the day that Marley graduated from Kindergarten, she recalled: “You said our only answers were morphine and hospice, and that the chances of seeing a first birthday were slim to none. We haven't been back to see you since.”

While Marley’s journey up to this point has not been easy, the mother revealed that her daughter is ‘now not only surviving, she is thriving.’

“This little girl who would ‘never reach any appropriate milestones’ has progressed from smiling to laughing to non-stop talking in the blink of an eye. She first rolled over, then crawled and now runs everywhere she goes. She has enamoured an entire town and considers all who live here her personal fan club,” she added, explaining just how the family has proven the doctor wrong.

Thankfully, the Bedfords chose to stay positive and believe in a brighter future for their daughter – but the doctor’s lack of compassion and any offering of hope on that awful day has stuck with them.

“The day you shattered our world with your dire predictions, you forgot to offer us the one thing that has carried us through time and time again…For everything you know about medicine, and all the tools you have to fight disease, you have forgotten that the most powerful tool of alI is hope,” she added.

Sadly, there are dozens of daily instances where families are left to pick up the pieces, emotionally, when they are dealt a traumatising diagnosis.

For those medical professionals reading her post, Marley’s mum has a very important message: “I pray that the next time you have a patient with a life-changing terminal diagnosis, you will remember Marley and reassure that new family that no matter what the paperwork or diagnosis may say, there is always hope.”
