Women all over the world have been doing their bit to raise awareness for cervical cancer and the importance of going for regular check-ups and smear tests, and Jan Secker has added her voice to the cause this weekend.

The British mum-of-one has urged women to put their health first and go for their smear tests when arranged, as it might just save their lives – exactly like hers did.

Jan had been scheduled in for a smear test back in 2009, but admitted that she was ‘too busy’ with work and life to go and have her check-up done. It was shortly after, while attending a reflexology massage, that her therapist raised concerns about her health.

“I hadn’t actually been for my smear, and she said, ‘It’s important, you should go.’ I was really busy with work and just didn’t have time to look after myself,” she recalled, to The Gazette.

After being advised by the masseuse to go and get the test done, Jan finally did – and she was shocked to discover that, at the age of 39, she had cervical cancer.

Thankfully, Jan was put on treatment in 2010, and now - almost six years later - she is fighting fit. However, she admitted this weekend that things could have turned out very differently had she ignored the advice to go and get a smear test done.

“If I hadn’t gone then it may have been too late for me…I told all the kids at work about it, to instil in them, their mums, sisters and girlfriends the importance of getting checked,” she added.

Jan’s experience just reiterates how important and life-saving smear tests and check-ups can be; we can all learn a lesson from her story.
