Having a baby is one of the most incredible things to ever happen to a person, but as many mums can attest to, the days following the arrival of your little one can prove emotional and testing.

One mum who has proven this in the most vivid and candid way possible is Danielle Haines, whose postpartum photo has gone viral for all the right reasons.

Danielle was overcome by her emotions, thoughts, and what was happening to her body three days after her tot was born, and she took to Facebook to share her story with mums all over the world.

Posting a photo of herself holding her baby, tears streaming down her face, Danielle describes herself as ‘a mess’ – in so many ways that all of us mothers can relate to.

This is a picture of me 3 days postpartum. I was so raw and so open, I was a fucking mess. I loved my baby, I missed...

“I loved my baby, I missed his daddy…my nipples were cracked and bleeding, my milk was almost in, my baby was getting really hungry, I was feeling sad that people kill babies,” she wrote.

Touching on what inspired her to take the photo, she recalled how her sister Sarah empathised with her story.

“We talked, she listened, she said, ‘I’ve been right where you are.’ It helped to know she went crazy once too!!! Then she said, ‘I know this might sound crazy, but do you have a camera? You look so raw and beautiful,’” she added.

Danielle’s post is well worth reading in full. We bet you can relate to what she has to say in this powerful essay.
