In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Selena and her kidney donor, friend Francia Raisa, open up about the operation for the first time.

When the 25-year-old singer found out her battle with lupus meant she would need a new kidney, she confesses that 'I didn’t want to ask a single person in my life.'

Francia stepped up and gave her friend the most precious gift: life.

The two pals met around 10 years ago at a charity event hosted by ABC Family and Disney. Francia, 29, starred in ABC Family drama The Secret Life of the American Teenager.

Selena has been very private about the operation so far, only telling her 128M Insta followers about the transplant in a post on September 14.

The photo shows her and Francia, who is also an actress, laying side-by-side and holding hands in hospital gowns. In a place that can be so scary, the pair look very brave together.

Selena says in the caption, “There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis.”

She also divulged in the post that her battle with lupus and subsequent recovery were what kept her out of the spotlight for the summer. The songstress was diagnosed with lupus in 2015, and has invited her fans to educate themselves on the autoimmune disease.

The mum of the former Disney Channel star has also expressed her gratitude for Francia’s generosity, saying “Selena gained a kidney, I was able to keep my little girl, but I also gained another daughter....thank you to everyone who was there for Sel, Francia and our families. We survived from all the love, prayers and God.”

I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health. I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you. Until then I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery. And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis. Lupus continues to be very misunderstood but progress is being made.
