Soaps have long been addressing taboo subjects from rape to spousal abuse, and now Coronation Street is dealing with another very important issue.

Viewers were shocked over last night’s scene between Leanne Tilsley and her son Simon Barlow, who was seen getting physically violent with his mum.

The show has been indicating a problem was brewing, with Simon having a number of outbursts over the last few weeks. Last night, however, things took a turn.

In another fit of rage, Simon grabbed a chunk of Leanne’s hair, shouting “good!” when she tells him he is hurting her. The single mum then pushes her son aside to free herself, resulting in a fall that sees him hurt his arm and Leanne feeling incredibly guilty.

She initially brings Simon around to his grandfather Ken to tell him what happened, but after seeing Simon’s fear that someone would find out what he did, she decides to keep the incident quiet.

However, if hints from cast and crew are anything to go by, this is far from over.

Reaction on Twitter from viewers was strong, with many saying Simon deserved the injury he got.

Other viewers felt more needed to be done, with one tweeter saying: “Leanne needs to stand up & admit she needs help, for Simon's sake! #Corrie”

Actress Jane Danson who plays Leanne on the long-running soap recently spoke about these upcoming scenes, saying: "There’s a moment between Leanne and Simon where he makes a move that startles her and makes her feel frightened.

"That’s unusual for Leanne because she’s quite a tough cookie.”
