Brazilian Gustavo Gomes has dedicated his career to taking beautiful photos, so when his daughter Violeta was making her arrival into the world, it made sense for him to document the journey in his own unique way.
In a series of raw images that have gone viral around the world, the highs and lows, pain and delight of Priscila’s journey are conveyed for the world to see.
In an interview with Buzzfeed.com, Gomes opened up about the special experience: “I’ve been photographing whatever happens in my life since I started photographing, so recording the time from when we learned about the pregnancy until the day Violeta was born was only natural for me.”
Priscila gave birth to the couple’s daughter at home, and she agreed to let Gustavo take the candid shots.
“I’m always photographing our daily life, so it wasn’t something deliberate. Now and then I’d ask her to pose with the specific purpose of having some traditional pregnancy photos, but these ones mostly came out a bit cheesy and too romantic,” he added.
Priscila’s labour lasted for 20 hours, and while Gustavo helped out for most of the process, a doula stepped in when he felt there was ‘nothing he could do for her’.
