A new mum is being praised for leaving her newborn at a fire station recently, after making the difficult decision to relinquish her parental rights.

The mum from Chicago had only given birth a few hours before she handed her daughter over, and people are now praising the woman for her responsible actions.

Safe Haven laws in America allow a parent surrender their baby within 30 days of birth to staff at a fire station, hospital or other emergency medical provider and a police station, without fear of prosecution or criminal liability.

Talking to WGNTV, Dawn Geras, from Save Abandoned Babies Foundation, said that she was delighted with the mum's actions.

“My heart is bursting with joy,” she said.

“We've helped to save not just the life of that baby, we've been able to help the parent to go on with their life knowing that they've taken the responsible action and that they can feel good they can go home tonight and feel good about what they've done.”
