The early days of your child’s development are some of the most important, so it makes sense that mothers – especially new mums – feel supported and informed when it comes to tending to their little ones’ needs.

It seems, however, that this isn’t the case for mums in the UK, if the results of a recent study are anything to go by.

Breastfeeding brand Medela recently undertook a Breastfeeding Support Survey to find out how satisfied or otherwise nursing mums are, and the results are rather alarming.

Out of the 2,000 mothers who participated in the survey, a whopping 70% wished they had been given a more realistic picture of what to expect when breastfeeding.

Meanwhile, two-thirds of the respondents admitted that they wished they had received more information about breastfeeding during their pregnancy.

Once you choose to breastfeed, it becomes a vital part of yours and your child’s life and daily routine, which highlights just how concerning these findings are.

According to Sioned Hilton of Medela, more breastfeeding education and information is needed in order to give mothers the best possible support during this important time in their lives.

“By managing mums’ expectations and giving a realistic image of what to expect, as well as ensuring they have the right information early on in pregnancy, we can help to prepare new parents for this special time and potentially help prolong their breastfeeding journeys,” she said.
