The mum of an obese baby has turned to doctors and a charity to help him shed the pounds.

Eight-month-old baby Santiago Mendoza weighs 44 pounds - more than double the average weight for a baby his age.

Santiago’s size is making it increasingly hard for him to move around properly, which led his mother Eunice to seek medical help.

"I’m worried about his obesity. I don’t want him to continue like this so, God willing, the treatment they’re going to give him for his heart will work to reduce his weight.”

The mum admitted it was her own "ignorance" that led to her son's problems as she continuously gave him milk and food to calm him down: "He was born with an anxiety, so if he cried I just fed him."

Colombian charity, Chubby Hearts Foundation, provided Eunice with help after she contacted them. They flew young Santiago from his home in Valledupar to the capital, Bogota, for specialist treatment.

While Santiago will need some treatment for his heart, the doctors currently want him to lose 17 pounds by adding more fruit and vegetables to his diet and weaning him off his formula. This is a long-term plan, which will see them first alter his diet and then as he gets older, enrol him in physical activities.

Hopefully Santiago will be healthy again very soon!
