When there’s a new baby in the family, every proud parent wants to show them off to as many family members as possible.

These days, social media and smartphones make it easier to share photos of our little ones with relatives who don’t live close by, or who find it difficult to get out and about.

While most grandparents are overjoyed to get the first glimpse of a new grandchild, this American grandad was slightly less enthused by a photo his daughter sent of her newborn baby.

Responding to a photo of the baby texted to his phone, the relaxed grandad sent his succinct congratulations. “OK,” he wrote.

Another relative thought his low-key response was so funny, he just had to share it with the world.

He uploaded a screenshot of the exchange in the family messaging group to Reddit, with the caption: “Aunt gave birth yesterday, and Grandpa was very excited.”

The hilarious text soon went viral and was viewed over 40,000 times on Reddit. Hundreds of other Reddit users chimed in with their thoughts about what the un-enthused grandad might be really thinking.

“OK...Text me when he's done two tours in 'Nam", one wrote.

“When I was that age, I was already helping my parents in the field,” another Redditor quipped. “That’s a baby alright,” another added.

Other users pointed out that a man of his generation would not be prone to excited displays of emotion, and that they had many family relatives who would respond in a similar fashion.

It was also theorised that the grandad might not be used to texting and sent a brief message just to acknowledge he’d received the photo.

“This was probably just his old man way of saying ‘acknowledged’ and just letting you know that he got the picture. He was probably smiling from ear to ear on the other end and showing everybody around him the picture of his grandbaby,” one Redditor wrote.

Another added: “Wow, that's a response that my dad would send!! I send a long message about the fun work that I've been doing, all I get in response is ‘cool’. Gaaaaah so infuriating.”
