Hearts have gone out to Connie Yates and Chris Gard this evening, following reports that little Charlie Gard has passed away.

The news was reported by the Mail Online, who claim that Connie confirmed the devastating news this evening.

The heartbroken mother is quoted as saying: "Our beautiful little boy has gone, we are so proud of you Charlie."

The news comes just a day after Connie and Chris were told that they would not have their final wish, to bring Charlie home to die in his own cot, granted.

While the parents were eager to say goodbye to their son away from Great Ormond Street Hospital and the glare of the media, in the end GOSH executives won the argument.

Connie and Chris were willing to privately pay for the team and equipment needed to bring Charlie home, but GOSH claimed that the plan was simply 'not practical'.

While the couple were no doubt crushed by the final decision, they must have been somewhat comforted by the wave of support they received. Indeed, according to their lawyer, nurses who had treated Charlie had apparently volunteered to help them out on their days off.

This evening's news ends a months-long battle for Connie and Chris, who have fought hard for the chance to bring their 11-month-old son to the US, for experimental treatment.

We can't imagine what they are going through this evening - they will remain in our thoughts.
