Plagiocephaly is a condition in which a baby’s head becomes flat in one area usually from lying in a certain position too often.

A baby’s skull is soft to accommodate the brain growth that occurs in the first year. During this time, a baby may get a flat spot on the back or side of the head. The condition is commonly called “positional plagiocephaly”.

Positional plagiocephaly will usually correct itself as the child grows and is not a concern. Premature babies are more likely to get positional plagiocephaly because their skulls are even softer than a full term baby.

In some cases, positional plagiocephaly can begin before birth. This happens when the baby is positioned with the head against the mother’s pelvis. This is very common in multiple births.

If your baby is diagnosed with plagiocephaly, the treatment is pretty simple. You must make sure to reposition your baby on a regular basis. A wedge pillow is a great help.
If the plagiocephaly is severe, your doctor may prescribe a helmet or head band that is customized to fit your baby. This apparatus will help the skull form normally and works best if worn starting at age 4 months.

Although repositioning your baby is recommended in cases of plagiocephaly, you must remember to never let your infant sleep on her tummy unsupervised.
