Police in the UK are appealing for information following a sexual attack in Wandsworth, south London.

The assault which occurred at approximately 7pm on Thursday evening involved a 13-year-old girl who was making her way home through a park in the area.

According to police, a man believed to be in his twenties forced the teenage girl into a woods near Tooting Bec Common where he subjected her to a violent assault.

Commenting on the nature of the crime, Detective Inspector Keith Ward of the Sexual Offences Exploitation and Child Abuse command said: "This was a horrific attack on a vulnerable girl who was forced by a man into a secluded area and raped."

Paying tribute to the young girl at the centre of this harrowing case, he continued: "The victim was able to provide a very good description of her attacker and we are keen to catch him before he has the opportunity to strike again."

In an effort to placate residents in the area, Det Inspector Ward explained that extra security measures have been put in place following Thursday's shocking events.

"Additional patrols will be taking place in the area where the incident occurred, this is to provide reassurance, and ongoing support is being provided to the victim by specially-trained officers."

The assailant is described as white, approximately 20-years-old and was said to be wearing a tracksuit top and bottoms with three white stripes down the side.

He was also wearing black gloves and a black woolly hat at the time of the assault.
