When you’re a member of the police force, you really do need to be prepared for anything, and that is exactly what officers Alex Muro and Arnaldo Mateo learned this week.

The pair have been praised by a pregnant woman who called them from the hard-shoulder of a highway, when she knew she would not make it to the hospital to give birth.

The expecting mother was on her way to her local hospital in New Jersey, in the early hours of Monday morning, when she realised she was going to have to give birth in her car.

After pulling over, the unidentified woman dialled 911 and waited anxiously until Officers Muro and Mateo arrived on the scene.

With no prior experience of delivering a baby, and just a pair of surgical gloves to aid them, the two officers went on to deliver a healthy baby girl to the woman, at the side of the road.

The officers’ car dashcam captured audio of the entire incident, and the two men have been praised for their cool and calm handling of the situation.

They can be heard counting while encouraging the new mother to push, before announcing: “It’s a girl! There you go. Here, mum.”

Commenting after the incident, Officer Mateo was modest as he told NBC: “It was just one of those moments where we had to respond and we did our jobs.”

Well done to all involved.
