One of the biggest decisions new mums have to make is whether to return to work or not. For some, it is a given due to money but for others they can be left sitting on the fence as they struggle to decide what is right for them.

If you are currently weighting up your options and are a little stuck about making the final decision, ask yourself the following questions:

Do you need to financially?

One of the biggest reasons people go back to work is because of finances. However, before you make your decision, sit down with your partner and discuss money, including how much you’d need to pay for childcare, before you decide.

Will you miss it if you don’t go back?

It is important you ask yourself if you will miss it if you don't go back. Most of us have worked really hard to land ourselves a job and it can be tough deciding to leave it. If you will miss the work and your colleagues then you might start to resent your time at home, so consider this before you decide.

Who will mind your baby?

This is one of the biggest decisions when it comes to deciding whether you want to go back to work or not – who will mind your child? There are many different childcare options including crèche, family, a nanny or an au pair so look at all your options before making any decisions.

Can you work part-time or flexi-time?

If you don't want to go back but need to for financial reasons, talk to your boss about working flexi-time or even part-time so that you can get the best of both worlds.

What does your heart say?

Talk to others who have returned to work and those who have decided to stay at home. It is important you get the perspective of both parties so that you can make a decision based on what is right for you and your family.

What are your career goals?

Your career and where you want it to go should also be factored into your decision. If you do decide to stay at home will it affect your long term career goals? Or if you do take a break can you go right back into it after a few years? Weigh up all your options so you are better able to make an informed decision.

Remember that whatever you decide doesn’t have to be permanent. If you do go back to work and realise it isn’t for you can leave and if you do decide that being a stay-at-home mum is not for you, it is possible to get back out there.  Whatever you decide, you are just doing the best for your family.
