Feeling guilty for being on your phone is unfortunately an everyday part of motherhood. And while it is important to focus your attention on your kids and to have them know that you are watching them, it is ok to spend time scrolling through your social media sites, reading emails or catching up with friends every once on a while.

Your kids are happy and having fun

So long as your kids are enjoying themselves and aren’t waiting around for you to help them up the slide or to push them on the swings, then a little phone time is ok. In fact, as your child gets older, they probably won’t appreciate you following them around everywhere they go anyway.

This is your time to relax

You have spent every single moment watching your kids, praising their jobs well done and showering them in kisses, and now it’s time for your ‘me-time’. Everyone always says how it is important to spend a little time doing something that you love and if this is scrolling through Facebook or reading news while your little one enjoys the slide and sandpit, then so be it.

It’s good for kids to know that they aren’t the centre of attention

While you want your kids to know that you are there for them, it is important that they realise that they can’t be the centre of your attention. All. The. Time.  This will teach them to be independent, self reliant and able to entertain themselves.

You will be able to focus more

Sometimes an unread email or not responding to a text message can leave you feeling slightly stressed, frustrated and irritable, which can unintentionally be directed towards your kids. Once you have contacted that person you have been meaning to for ages or replied to that urgent email, you will be able to relax more and focus your attention on your children.

As long as it is done in moderation, your child is safe and out of harm's way, then it is ok to sit in the park and take out your phone.
