No doubt there are many parents reading this with little ones at home who are just pining for a dog, and the last thing you want to do is disappoint them or break their hearts. However, getting a dog is a serious responsibility – and so, serious agreements need to be met!

This was the thinking of Reddit user R.Johnstone13, who recently uploaded a copy of the ‘family dog contract’ he drafted up when his three children were begging him for a dog.

Admitting that he was ‘reluctant’ to get a four-legged pet, the dad shared the list of 13 terms he needed his family to meet in order to give his approval.

The terms include him never having to pick up dog poop or give the pet a bath; he also reserved the right to veto any name he didn’t approve of, and he was very clear that the dog could not slobber in the house!

While there are some areas where the family might have had trouble agreeing (case in point: number 11), we bet they didn’t have any trouble signing away on number 13: “The kids promise to never fall out of love with the dog or get bored of it.”

The father revealed that, two weeks after the contract was signed, the family welcomed a beautiful shelter dog named Kershaw into their home.

“It’s been two years, and the kids (now ages 12, 13 and 15) have been pretty good about doing everything…Everyone (including Dad) adores the dog, which has been a fantastic addition to our family,” he added.

Would you consider getting your kids to sign a similar ‘contract’?
