All of us have some misconceptions going into motherhood, and it's always a bit of a shock when we find out something new about being a parent.

For Sam Faiers, she experienced a huge surprise - but a happy one, as it led to the birth of her daughter, Rosie Knightly.

The former TOWIE star revealed on The Mummy Diaries that she was surprised she fell pregnant while still breastfeeding her son Paul, who was born in 2015, as she thought it worked as a form of contraception.

The reality star and her partner, Paul Knightly, welcomed their baby girl in November last year.

"I didn't think that I could fall pregnant while breastfeeding and then it just happened," Sam said during the first episode of the third series, which debuted on ITVBe last night.

She wasn't completely wrong, though. Some women do use breastfeeding as a form of natural conception, the NHS notes, as you are unlikely to have periods if you only give your baby breast milk and they are less than six months old.

This is referred to as the lactational amenorrhoea method (LAM). However, they recommend using another form of contraception if you start giving your child anything other than breast milk (such as formula, a dummy, or solid foods), start having periods, or your baby is older than six months.

The 27-year-old further explained in a recent interview with OK! magazine, "Yeah, she was actually [a surprise]. I honestly didn't think you could, it is [breastfeeding] a natural form of contraception – they say."

"But at that point of feeding Baby Paul, it was really for comfort, I don't think I had a lot of milk – it was more just for comfort."

"So yeah, obviously I fell pregnant and I was completely surprised," the mum-of-two added.
