A school nurse is being hailed a hero after saving the life of one young boy, who complained of sore legs.

Nathan Campbell, from Philadelphia, didn’t want to play outside because his legs hurt so his teacher sent him to Patti Butler, the school nurse.

After taking one look at the kindergartner, Pattie, who noticed his strange colour, immediately knew that something very serious was wrong.

The nurse called Nathan’s mother, Nicole DeFeo, and insisted she take him to the hospital. However, the mum, who initially thought there was nothing wrong with her son, waited a few days before bringing him to the doctor.

“His skin was translucent,” Patti told CBS Philly.

“I’ve only seen someone look this colour in 25 years.”

And it was here that a startling discovery was made: Nathan had leukaemia.

Thankfully, the youngster is now in remission, and Nicole credits nurse Patti for saving her son’s life.

“If she hadn’t called us we wouldn’t be standing here talking about Nate today.”
