More and more parents are turning to their favourite TV shows and movies for inspiration when it comes to naming their newborns.

This has become apparent following the publication of a list of 2016’s top 100 most popular baby names.

There were few surprises among the top 10, with tradition reigning supreme for parents in the UK. The lists are as follows:

Girls  Boys
1. Olivia 1. Oliver
2. Lily 2. Muhammad
3. Sophia 3. Noah
4. Emily 4. Harry
5. Amelia 5. Jack
6. Ava 6. Charlie
7. Isla 7. Jacob
8. Isabella 8. George
9. Isabelle 9. Ethan
10. Sophie  10. Henry

The list was compiled using data from a survey of around 70,000 new parents, and information gathered has proven that increasing numbers of mums and dads are opting for decidedly more unique names.

According to the stats collected by BabyCentre, more and more couples are opting for names inspired by characters from popular sci-fi movies and shows.

This was clear from the rising popularity of names such as Kylo (Star Wars), Harley and Quinn (Suicide Squad), and Harrison (Arrow).

Some of the more unusual names produced by the survey included Vogue, Envy, Kiwi and Rhapsody.
