We have long been encouraged to ditch the fizzy drinks and give our little ones water or juice instead, and this latest discovery is sure to convert any sceptics out there.

New research has shown that fizzy drinks are not only bad for your weight and your teeth, but they could also be posing risk to your brain.

A study carried out a team of experts at the University of California has shown that fructose corn syrup – a key ingredient in fizzy drinks – can slow the brain’s ability to self-repair after a head trauma.

Explaining the findings and their significance, lead researcher Prof Gomez-Pinilla said: “Our take-home message can be boiled down to this: reduce fructose in your diet if you want to protect your brain.”

“Our findings suggest fructose disrupts plasticity – the creation of fresh pathways between brain cells that occurs when we learn or experience something new. That is a huge obstacle for anyone to overcome – but especially for a traumatic brain injury patient, who is often struggling to re-learn daily routines and how to care for himself or herself,” he added.

Previous research has suggested that fizzy drinks could also contribute to the development of such serious diseases as cancer and diabetes.
