Like many musicians and artists who use their music as a form of therapy and a way of dealing with certain issues, Demi Lovato has addressed a very personal topic in a recent track.

Opening up about the relationship she shared with her dad Patrick, the 23-year-old star reflected on the impact his passing from cancer had on her in recent years.

With admirable honesty, the former Disney star explained: "I was very conflicted when he passed because he was abusive. He...he was mean, but he wanted to be a good person."

Despite highlighting her father's flaws, the Heart Attack singer did acknowledge her father's desire to better himself during an interview about the track.

"He wanted to have his family. And when my mom married my stepdad, he still had this huge heart where he would say, 'I'm so glad that he's taking care of you and doing the job that I wish I could do," she revealed.

Demi, who has publicly battled addiction, mental health issues and eating disorders, is adamant her father's own issues prevented him from being the parent he wanted to be.

"He knew he wasn't capable of raising a family and it was because of his mental illness. To know that it wasn't fully his fault really was saddening to me," she admitted.

Demi, who appeared as a judge on the second season of the American X Factor, sought solace in her work when coming to terms with her father's death two years ago.

Reflecting on her coping mechanism at the time, she told YouTube viewers: "I wanted to write about it; I wanted to process it."

We think Demi is one incredibly brave young woman.
