Babies cry. That's what they do. At the end of the day, it is their only way of telling us what is wrong.

And it's usually pretty easy to figure out how to help them; they're either dirty, wet, hungry or tired.

But sometimes they cry and you have no idea why... which is where this doctor's trick to help settle infants might very well come in handy.

Dr. Robert Hamilton, who has been a paediatrician for over 30 years, has come up with a solution that involves a simple shake of the booty!

So what does he do?

Tucking the infant's arms across their chest, he holds the baby with one hand, supporting their chin at the same time.

The doctor from California then places the palm of his other hand on the baby's bottom, again making sure he has a firm, supportive grip.

Holding Baby at a 45-degree angle, the paediatrician either bounces them up and down or shakes their bum - both of which are done VERY gently.

According to Today, the angle at which the baby is held means you have complete control of them; all movements should be done smoothly - with no jerking movements.

However, it only works on babies up to about three months old... because any older and they'll be too heavy to hold in that position.

What do you think? Will you be giving it a try?
