Splinters are usually not serious and can be removed and treated at home.

To remove a splinter, first make sure that your hands are clean. Use tweezers or a sterile needle. You can sterilise the tweezers and the needle with alcohol.

Clean the area with soap and water making sure not to disturb the splinter or push it in further.

If the splinter is sticking out of the skin, you can grab it with the tweezers and pull it out away from the direction that it entered the ski.

If the splinter is not sticking out of the skin, it may require you to use the needle to make a small opening in the skin so that you can get to the splinter.

When you have removed the splinter successfully, wash the entire area with soap and warm water and apply a small amount of antibiotic ointment and a bandage.

If your child gets a splinter that is large and you feel you cannot remove it, you should see your doctor.

If your child will not let you try to remove the splinter and it is small and doesn’t require a doctor, soak them in the bathtub. Sometimes, the water will work the splinter out of the skin.
